Good morning in a beautiful morning to all our Paige Academy Families,
We are beginning a new Vocabulary Building Activity starting this week. It's called Word Bank. We are asking parents to develop a word bank at home with their children. Kids will be asked to make a deposit 2-3 times a week at the bank. Each deposit will be a word they learn about growing plants or anything that fascinated them. For example, chlorophyll, photosynthesis, stem, seed, life-cycle etc. All they need is a piece of paper or a poster and some markers, crayons, color pencils. Parents will write down the word, draw a picture for the word (you can do this!) read it back to the child, do letter sounds game and build upon their knowledge of phonics. During Zoom sessions (small group or whole group), kids will be invited to share their favorite words of the week.
Now, let's discuss about the seeds today...and their superpowers! When you and your child take a walk or enjoy some fresh fruits and vegetables together, you will definitely come across some tiny or big seeds along the way. Seeds are all around us! You will notice that these little (and sometimes big!) treasures can be quite fascinating to all of us.
It makes sense to use the regular materials that are concrete and materials that kids come in contact with on many accounts, it naturally increases their enthusiasm and intrigue about the topic and it helps them make meaningful connections.
Children come across many seeds as they play outdoors. Also, when they eat natural foods and know what to look for they also quickly realize that they eat many types of seeds. It’s also a lot of fun to plant seeds so this seed theme can lead to many exciting activities.
It is most fun to teach about seeds and plants during the spring or at least during a planting season (which is never a year round thing for where we live!).
Here are some concepts kids can learn and ask many questions about:
Many foods that foods come from seeds
Differences between seeds we eat and seeds we don’t eat
How differently seeds react and what happens when you put different seeds in water
What happens when you try to grow seeds in different materials
Why most seeds take different amount of time to sprout
All seeds look different at different stages in process of becoming plants
